Timber falls into 2 groups: softwood and hardwood. Softwoods are coniferous (evergreen) and hardwoods are deciduous (broad leafed). As in any categorisation, there are always exceptions. After sawing the timber to various sizes, it is necessary to remove the moisture from the timber by going through the seasoning process. Unseasoned timber contains up to 60 per cent of moisture content intact. Seasoning makes timber more stable, more resistant to decay and insect attack. Seasoning also makes the timber lighter, stronger and a better finished product to work with. Softwood timber is normally shipped unprotected in bundles or packagings of sawn timber of various sizes. Hardwood timber is normally shipped in bundled units of planks, strapped by metal bands.
